Hidden in Plain Sight: 20 Neglected Tropical Diseases Affecting Millions in Nigeria

Across many communities in Nigeria, millions of people live at risk of diseases that rarely make headlines but have devastating consequences for health, productivity, and quality of life. These conditions are known as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), a group of infections that primarily affect populations living in poverty, especially in rural and underserved areas. NTDs thrive where access to clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and health education is limited. Although many of these diseases are preventable and treatable, they continue to affect vulnerable populations because they receive far less attention and funding than other major diseases.

The infographic below highlights 20 NTDs present in Nigeria, including Schistosomiasis, Lymphatic filariasis (Elephantiasis), Onchocerciasis (River blindness), Trachoma, Dengue fever, Rabies, Buruli ulcer, Leishmaniasis, and Scabies, among others. These diseases are caused by parasites, bacteria, viruses, and vectors such as mosquitoes, flies, and contaminated water sources. Some can lead to severe disability, blindness, chronic pain, or social stigma if not detected and treated early. Raising awareness about these diseases is the first step toward controlling and eventually eliminating them. Communities can protect themselves through improved hygiene, safe water practices, vector control, vaccination where available, and early healthcare seeking.

At the Center for One Health and Zoonotic Diseases (COHAZD), we are committed to strengthening awareness, surveillance, and community engagement around neglected diseases. Using a One Health approach, we recognize that human health is closely connected to animal health and environmental conditions. By educating communities, supporting research, and promoting early prevention strategies, we can reduce the burden of NTDs and protect the health of millions.

NTDs MAY BE NEGLECTED, BUT THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THEM MUST NEVER BE.
