In our relentless pursuit of health equity, the Slum, and Rural Health Initiative conducted a free Hepatitis B screening for Community members in Lalupon, Ibadan. Our efforts focused on combating hepatitis B through awareness, education, screening, and vaccination.

Our decision to begin the ERADICATE HEPATITIS B PROJECT was driven by the growing number of people affected by the virus. Seeing the increasing prevalence of this virus, we felt the urge to take action. We aim to address this issue by implementing strategies to prevent the spread of Hepatitis B and improve the health outcomes of those affected by it. We aim to make a positive impact on the community by creating awareness, providing education, and offering screening services as well as vaccination. Having partnered with the Lalupon Primary Health Center; we made significant strides in raising awareness and fostering community engagement in the fight against hepatitis B.

The outreach began with community awareness activities, where some team members visited various people, religious bodies, community leaders, shops, and homes, to remind them about the scheduled Hepatitis B screening outreach we are here for and why it is crucial to undergo the screening. They engaged in one-on-one conversations, providing simple explanations about the virus and stressing the importance of getting tested for it.

The screening outreach at Lalupon Primary Health Care Center kicked off with an educational session, reminding them about the importance of being screened and vaccinated against Hepatitis B. We emphasized that while there’s no cure for Hepatitis B, it can be prevented. Many individuals showed eagerness to undergo the screening, although some were hesitant due to the fear of discovering they might have the virus.

However, through our community awareness efforts and education, we successfully screened about 70 individuals. Thanks to the support of World Connect, we were able to screen community members for FREE.

As our community outreach came to an end, we looked forward to returning and screening more people. We’re delighted to play a part in the battle against Hepatitis B, ensuring that everyone can live a life free from the worries of this virus.
