Common Myths & Misconceptions About MPox

Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is a viral disease similar to smallpox caused by a virus. It’s found mostly in areas of Africa but has been seen in other regions of the world. It causes flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills, and a rash that can take weeks to clear.

Unfortunately, along with the spread of the disease, misinformation, and myths have also proliferated. Here, are seven common misconceptions about mpox that will help you to understand the facts

Myth 1: Mpox Affects Only Monkeys

FACT:  Contrary to its name, Mpox is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans.  While monkeys can carry the virus, human-to-human transmission is also possible.

Myth 2: Mpox is a New Disease

FACT: The mpox virus was first identified in 1958 in monkeys (hence the name), and the first human cases were documented in the 1970s.

Myth 3: You Get Mpox From Being in A Crowd

FACT: Unlike COVID-19, mpox is not known to linger in the air, and it is not nearly as infectious. Additionally, mpox does not spread during short periods of shared airspace with someone infected with it. So, walking through a crowded restaurant or store is not sufficient to contract the virus.

Myth 4: Mpox is Always Deadly

FACT: While mpox can be severe, it is not always fatal. Most cases are mild and self-limiting, with symptoms including fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Severe cases are rare but can occur, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Myth 5: There is no Treatment for Mpox

FACT: Although there is no specific antiviral treatment for mpox, supportive care can help manage symptoms and aid recovery. Vaccination against smallpox has also been shown to provide some protection against mpox.

Myth 6: Only Gay & Bisexual Men Can Get Mpox

FACT: Mpox has disproportionately affected the LGBTQ+ community, but it is crucial to understand that ANYONE who does not have immunity against the virus can get mpox.

This myth stigmatizes the LGBTQ+ community, as it implies that people who are not a part of it do not have to care about what’s going on with this outbreak.

Myth 7: Mpox is Found Only In Africa

FACT: While mpox was initially discovered in Africa, cases have been reported in other parts of the world, including the United States and Asia.

The Slum and Rural Health Initiative’s CAMP project is currently investigating Nigerian’s knowledge of mpox. By understanding the facts about mpox, we can combat misinformation and take appropriate measures to prevent its spread. Stay informed, stay safe
