In a momentous stride towards empowering global health leaders, Ruth Oladele, our esteemed Admin Officer, has been chosen as an AstraZeneca Young Health Programme (YHP) Impact Fellow. This accolade places her among a cohort of exceptional changemakers dedicated to combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and championing child and adolescent health.
The Significance of the AstraZeneca Young Health Programme
Non-communicable diseases, encompassing heart disease, cancer, respiratory conditions, and diabetes, stand as the leading global causes of mortality. Alarmingly, these ailments are largely attributed to five specific risk factors: tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, exposure to air pollution, and the harmful use of alcohol. It’s estimated that a staggering 70% of premature deaths result from behaviors initiated during adolescence.
The AstraZeneca Young Health Programme, in partnership with One Young World, has been at the forefront of mobilizing young leaders since 2016. This collaboration aims to identify and support individuals who are actively addressing the burden of NCDs within their communities. Through a Scholarship program, over 100 young leaders have become part of the One Young World Community, participating in the annual One Young World Summit.
However, recognizing the need for more comprehensive support, AstraZeneca has elevated its commitment. The newly introduced YHP Impact Fellowship goes beyond scholarships, offering development opportunities, access to networks, and funding to amplify the impact of young health leaders.
Ruth Oladele: A Beacon of Change
Ruth Oladele, our dedicated Admin Officer, now stands as a shining example of this commitment. Her selection as an AstraZeneca YHP Impact Fellow speaks volumes about her dedication to the cause of global health. With a clear focus on child and adolescent health, Ruth has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to addressing non-communicable diseases within her community.
A Triple Dividend: Investing in Adolescent Health
The underlying philosophy of the YHP is rooted in the belief that prioritizing adolescent health delivers a triple dividend. Not only does it bring immediate benefits to adolescents and those around them, but it also sets the stage for healthier lives in adulthood and positively impacts the health of future generations.
Empowering Through Networks, Development, and Funding
As part of the fellowship, Ruth Oladele will have access to a wealth of resources. She will participate in the 2023 One Young World Summit in Belfast, UK, and receive a US $10,000 grant. This grant will be dedicated to a specific project within her eligible non-profit organization, focusing on under-resourced and marginalized communities in low- and middle-income countries.
Furthermore, Ruth will gain access to structured learning and development opportunities, enabling her to scale her impact. This includes participation in the One Young World Academy, an esteemed MBA program accredited by a university, as well as professional training.
A Legacy of Impact
As we celebrate Ruth’s achievement, we are reminded that the collective efforts of passionate individuals can lead to transformative change. Her journey exemplifies our shared commitment to creating a world where health and wellbeing are accessible rights for every individual, regardless of their circumstances. We stand with Ruth and all changemakers in this crucial endeavor. Together, we can forge a brighter, healthier future for all.
