The Food in Slums Project

About 11% of Nigeria’s population, 25 million people, are at risk of food insecurity

Access to food in Nigeria, especially for people living in Slums, Rural and Hard to reach communities is an increasing problem. According to findings released by Statista in 2022, over 21% of Nigerians experienced hunger between 2018 – 2020, a figure that is set to increase given the new wave of attacks on local farmers. Furthermore, according to a report published by Gabriel Ewepu on Vanguard, about 19 million people were estimated to have been thrown into severe hunger in just 20 States in Nigeria as of 2021 end. Malnutrition is widespread in the entire country and, slums, rural areas and hard-to-reach communities are mostly vulnerable to malnutrition, chronic food shortages, erratic food supply, poor quality foods, high food costs, and even total lack of food.

How is SRHIN Enhancing Food and Nutrition Security in Nigeria?

Food in Slum initiative is a youth-led and community participatory solution to hunger that leverages donation of food items to people living in slums, rural and hard-to-reach communities.

Project Feature

Community Participatory Solution

The Food in Slum Initiative is a community-driven project that involves the active participation of people living in slums, rural, and hard-to-reach communities. This approach allows the project to have a more significant impact on those who are directly affected by the hunger and malnutrition crisis.

Donation of Food Items

We leverage the activities of SRHIN Health Equity Champions in each states to form strategic partnerships with local organizations to ensure that food items and resources are collected and distributed effectively. These partnerships enable the project to reach more people in need, especially those living in poverty.

Interactive and Impactful

The initiative’s impact is not only enjoyable but also deeply meaningful, leaving an indelible imprint on the hearts and minds of all those involved. SRHIN’s approach is simple yet impactful, providing hope and nourishment where it is needed most.
