The STREEM Project

More than 13 Million children are out of school in Nigeria and majority of them are on the street.

Children living/working on the streets are one of the most vulnerable sections of society that are prone to mental health issues. This is because they usually encounter problems like physical abuse, torture, sexual violence, exploitation, drug abuse and violation of basic rights. The proposed intervention aims to use sporting and gaming activities to drive drug abuse awareness and prevention based on the theory of replacement of a harmful habit with a healthy habit

What is SRHIN doing to address this Issue?

Sports for Street Children: Monthly sports (indoor & outdoor games) will be conducted with street children in a rural community in Southwest, Nigeria. This will last for 5-6 weeks and would end with a competition where rewards will be based on participation in the games.
Mental Health Education: Every sport session will also include a 10–15-minute mental health education session. This will cover diverse topics such as awareness of depression, mental distress, mental illness, common misconceptions about mental health, stigma & discrimination of mental illness, seeking help, etc.
Innovative approaches used to empower street children:

  • Sports for street children
  • Mental Health Education
We play games with and we are friends with our target audience because we see them as a partner rather than a beneficiary. We know that change happens when barriers to quality health information and services are shattered.
We are energized by their feeling of joy and happiness to do more in ensuring that the health and wellness of street children is prioritized

Impact: 229 street children were sensitized on mental health, the dangers of substance abuse, ways to seek help and prevent getting stigmatized being a child on the street.
