Despite several evidences that support the safety and potency of vaccines, there is still wide hesitancy around the acceptance of the approved COVID-19 vaccines in Nigeria.
The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the virus, SARS-COV-2 has significantly increased discussions and awareness about vaccines. Several voices have contributed to the role vaccines play in disease prevention and most especially, how safe vaccines are. There is enough evidence that vaccines are considered one of the greatest achievements in attaining community and global health.
However, despite the scientific proof and loads of evidence that support the safety and potency of vaccines, there is still wide hesitancy around the acceptance of the approved COVID-19 vaccines in Nigeria.
What is SRHIN doing to address this Issue?
The Youth in COVAX project is a healthcare information awareness program for young people living in Oyo and Lagos State. The project is being implemented by Slum and Rural Health Initiative and it is aimed at training and educating young people on the importance of COVID-19 Vaccines. It’s a community-led project as trained volunteers (Community Pharmacists) are charged and mandated to also educate other people in their communities. Youth 4 COVAX will empower young people with the necessary skills to combat COVID-19 vaccines misinformation and guide people through how getting vaccinated is a preventive and also a protective measure. Community pharmacists play a strategic role in combating misinformation that surrounds Covid-19 vaccines. They are the most accessible and the likely first point of contact for locals in a community. The Youth in COVAX project helps to combat misinformation by empowering frontline health givers and volunteers with the right information to combat COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.
