Raising Awareness: Preventing Non-Communicable Diseases Through School-based Outreaches

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have emerged as a significant global health concern, affecting millions worldwide. These diseases, fueled by factors such as unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, and tobacco and alcohol use, account for a staggering 70% of premature deaths. Alarming statistics aside, the root causes often trace back to behaviors initiated during adolescence.

In response to this pressing issue, the Slum and Rural Health Initiative has launched the “Adopt-A-School NCDs Project,” a pioneering initiative aimed at educating and empowering adolescents to prevent NCDs. This innovative program harnesses the power of peer-to-peer education, with trained undergraduates serving as ambassadors in Nigerian communities.

As a proud ambassador for the project, I had the privilege of partnering with a secondary school in Ibadan. The reception from the school was overwhelmingly positive, setting the stage for an impactful inaugural session. Unlike traditional lectures, this session was an immersive experience, blending informative talks with practical demonstrations and interactive activities.

During the session, it became evident that many students were unaware of NCDs and their risk factors. Through storytelling and real-life examples, we painted a vivid picture of the prevalence and consequences of NCDs, sparking curiosity and empathy among the students.

One of the highlights of the outreach was the hands-on activities, where students expressed their understanding of NCDs creatively. From crafting visual representations of risk factors to engaging in discussions about healthy habits, the students embraced the opportunity to learn in a fun and interactive way.

The impact of the outreach extended beyond the classroom, as students expressed a newfound sense of responsibility towards their health and that of their community. Feedback from participants highlighted the importance of such initiatives in dispelling misconceptions and empowering individuals to make informed choices. “It was a surprise to the students when the person they actually thought would be Overweight due to her stature was actually of a health weight”

Through initiatives like the Adopt-A-School NCDs Project, we are laying the foundation for a healthier future. By equipping adolescents with knowledge and fostering healthy habits early on, we are not just preventing NCDs but also cultivating a generation of health-conscious individuals ready to tackle global health challenges head-on.

As I reflect on my experience, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful cause. Moving forward, I am more inspired than ever to continue spreading awareness about NCD prevention and empowering communities to lead healthier lives. Together, we can make a difference and build a world where NCDs are no longer a barrier to well-being.
