SRHIN Women group organizes sensitization to mitigate female genital mutilation in Nassarawa State

Blog Post

The Slum and Rural Health Initiative Women Group took a crucial step in Nasarawa State by organizing a sensitization campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM) in Gwargwada and Ugya communities.   FGM is a form of violence against women that entails the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons. They focused on educating community members about the harmful effects of FGM, they aimed to foster awareness and prevent further instances of this harmful practice.

During the campaign, community members were engaged in discussions led by members of the Women’s Group. They highlighted the physical and emotional tolls of FGM, emphasizing the risks of infection, childbirth complications, and lasting trauma. They made them understand that FGM is a violation of girls’ and women’s human rights.  Through open dialogues and informative sessions, community members were encouraged to reject FGM and speak out about the risks and realities of FGM.

We received positive feedback from community leaders and residents alike, with many expressing their commitment to eradicating FGM and safeguarding the health of future generations. SRHIN SimbiHealth Women Group reiterated their dedication to supporting communities in Nasarawa State and pledged to continue their advocacy efforts against harmful practices like FGM.
